Did you know, this grand building right before you, Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital, was the start of something truly remarkable? It began with a dedicated physician, Sir Patrick Dun, who left behind a legacy in the form of income-generating property. The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland wanted to create a School of Physic, a place where clinical lectures could be given. They felt the need for a clinical hospital to make these lessons come alive for students. That’s how it all began, in a house on Clarendon Street in 1788. But the cost of running this first hospital was just too high.

As the story unfolded, the hospital moved a few times, eventually finding a home on Wellington Quay. It was called Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital, in honour of the man who sparked this whole medical movement. It wasn’t until 1800 that a crucial Act of Parliament gave the College of Physicians the funds to build their dream hospital. Sir Patrick Dun’s vision was finally realised, a place to teach, treat and inspire generations of medical professionals.

This building, with its impressive granite facade, was influenced by the renowned architect George Papworth, giving it that elegant touch. It opened its doors on October 25th, 1808, and became a beacon of medical education, serving as a training ground for not only physicians but also midwives and army nurses. It’s said that the first scientific nursing training in Ireland was introduced right here, by Margaret Huxley in the 1880s.

Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital became a hotbed of groundbreaking discoveries. You might be surprised to hear that one of the earliest medical reports on the effects of X-rays was sent from one of the hospital’s assistant physicians to the British Medical Journal in 1896.

Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital stood proudly on Grand Canal Street, serving generations of patients and fostering medical progress in Ireland. Today, as you stand here, remember the legacy of this remarkable institution and its contributions to both the medical and social landscape of Dublin.
