Remember those late nights fueled by pure jazz? This is Birdland. It is a legendary Hamburg jazz club. Birdland resides in the Eimsbüttel district on Gärtnerstraße.
Birdland opened its doors in 1985. Dieter Reichert was the founder. The Jazz Federation Hamburg e.V. supported the club. They organized events and offered free entry to members. Birdland can host 150 people. There are seats for about 110. It became a vital venue. It showcased both international and local jazz talent.
Swing filled the air at Birdland. Mainstream jazz and modern jazz also played. Latin jazz, Dixieland, and avant-garde music thrived here. Only live music echoed through the club. Concerts occurred several times a week. A weekly jam session was a highlight. Beginners and music students mixed with jazz stars. A vocal session occurred once a month.
Many famous musicians graced Birdland’s stage. Chet Baker played here. Art Blakey also performed. Ray Brown’s bass resonated within these walls. Rebekka Bakken’s vocals captivated audiences. Tommy Flanagan’s piano enchanted listeners. Johnny Griffin’s saxophone wailed. Joe Henderson’s unique sound echoed. Diana Krall’s voice charmed everyone. Brad Mehldau’s modern touch inspired. Viktoria Tolstoy’s presence was unforgettable. The Marsalis brothers, Branford and Wynton, also played at Birdland. Recordings from Birdland appeared on ACT and Nagel-Heyer labels.
Birdland closed on June 30, 2013. But the story doesn’t end there. It reopened on October 2, 2014. Dieter Reichert’s sons, Wolff and Ralph Reichert, took over. They brought Birdland back to life.
In 2023, the Clubkombinat Hamburg e. V. honored Birdland. It won “Konzert des Jahres” for “Hamburg liest verbrannte Bücher und singt verbrannte Lieder”. This celebrated Hamburg’s club scene.
Today, Birdland continues to swing. It is one of Hamburg’s oldest jazz clubs. It offers high-class jazz and fresh pop music. The atmosphere reminds people of New York City jazz cellars.
