“A beautiful little Gothic gem” That’s how one visitor described St Brigid’s Catholic Church in Baillieston Glasgow. This isn’t just any church. It’s a story etched in stone and stained glass. A testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of a community.

St Brigid’s is dedicated to the contemporary of St Patrick. She’s known as the “Mary of the Irish”. A powerful figure indeed. For many years though Catholics in Baillieston faced a challenge. They had to travel miles to attend Mass. Their journey took them through rugged countryside. First to St Mary’s in Calton then later to St Patrick’s in Coatbridge. A long hard journey for worship.

In 1872 Father George McBrearty secured an acre of land. He transformed a stable into a chapel-school. By Christmas 1874 the first Mass was celebrated in Baillieston. A momentous occasion. Father Peter Terken took over in 1879. He oversaw the replacement of the makeshift chapel. In 1891 Pugin & Pugin renowned architects were commissioned. They created the beautiful church we see today. A masterpiece of Early Decorated Gothic style. The stunning rock-faced blond sandstone gleams. The steeply pitched slate roof adds to its charm. A huge traceried window dominates the east gable. Below sits a statue of St Brigid herself.

Inside a rich array of colours captivates the eye. Light streams through numerous windows. Octagonal pillars separate the nave and aisles. A magnificent open timber roof stretches overhead. The Sacred Heart and Lady side chapels are exquisitely ornamented. Marble mosaics shimmer. The chancel holds a sculpture of the risen Christ. Above is an original rose window depicting the Creation. The current altar arrangement reflects changes after the Second Vatican Council. The altar now faces the congregation a symbol of inclusion.

Plans for an elaborate tower and spire never materialized. However a belfry and an organ were later added. A more recent addition is a stained-glass window. It commemorates Canon Daniel Hennessy a beloved parish priest. The window depicts St Brigid and St Colmcille together.

St Brigid’s Catholic Church in Baillieston isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith. It’s a symbol of community resilience and a place where history and worship intertwine. It continues to serve the Baillieston community a beacon of hope and spirituality. A true Glasgow treasure.
