Perhaps you’ve heard of Porter Gaud School. It stands as a pillar of education here in Charleston. Porter Gaud’s story is one of mergers and growth. It’s a tale of adapting to the changing times while holding fast to core values.

Founded in 1867, Porter Gaud began as the Porter Military Academy. The Rev. Anthony Toomer Porter established it. His goal was to educate boys orphaned by the Civil War. Porter embraced the educational ideas of William Augustus Muhlenberg. He focused on faith, honor, and knowledge.

In 1908, William Steen Gaud founded the Gaud School for Boys. Then in 1931, Ann Carson Elliott established the Watt School. It was a coeducational primary school. It served as a feeder for the Gaud School.

The year 1964 marked a significant turning point for Porter Gaud School. The Porter Military Academy, the Gaud School, and the Watt School merged. The military program was dropped. The new entity became Porter Gaud School. The school then moved to its current 88-acre campus along the Ashley River. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad donated the land.

Porter Gaud opened its new campus in September 1965. It had 469 day students. The following year, it adopted an open admissions policy. It became one of the first schools in the South to do so. In 1972, Porter Gaud admitted female students. By 1975, girls were included at all levels of the school.

In May 2008, Porter Gaud expanded again. It acquired The O’Quinn Schools. The O’Quinn Schools serve preschool students. They range from age two through kindergarten. They have two campuses.
