Listen closely as we step into San Pasqual Valley a place where time dances between the echoes of the past and the vibrant pulse of the present. San Pasqual Valley is the northernmost community of San Diego. It is a land rich in history and natural beauty. It invites us to explore its captivating story.

The story of San Pasqual Valley begins long ago. The Kumeyaay people lived here for centuries. They were deeply connected to the land. They understood its rhythms. The valley was named for the Kumeyaay village of San Pasqual.

In 1835 the Kumeyaay pueblo of San Pasqual was established. This followed the closing of the missions by the Mexican government in 1833. The Kumeyaay defended themselves from Quechan incursions.

The wagon road from Warner’s Ranch to San Diego passed through San Pasqual Valley. In 1846 the Battle of San Pasqual took place here during the Mexican American War. General Don Andrés Pico led the Californios. They fought Stephen W Kearny’s US Army troops. The battle occurred near the Kumeyaay village.

From 1857 to 1860 the valley was part of the San Antonio San Diego Mail Line stagecoach road. San Pasqual village served as a way station. But in 1878 the Kumeyaay were evicted from their land by San Diego County authorities.

Today the San Pasqual Band of Diegueno Mission Indians keeps their history alive. In 1972 the San Diego Zoo Safari Park opened. It was originally named the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

San Pasqual Valley has a unique climate. It is borderline semi arid with hot dry summers and cool wet winters. The temperature variation is significant. Winter nights can be much colder than elsewhere in San Diego.

Much of the valley is part of the San Pasqual Valley Agricultural Preserve. Here you will find citrus avocado and dairy farms. The San Pasqual Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area. It is known for hot days and ocean cooled nights.

Rancho Guejito is a large Mexican land grant. It is one of the last single parcels of its kind. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park occupies a large area in the valley. The San Pasqual and Clevenger Canyon Open Space Park is at the valley’s eastern end.

San Pasqual Academy serves foster youth. The residential area near the agricultural preserve is called Rancho San Pasqual or Eagle Crest. The San Pasqual Valley AVA was created in 1981. It was the fourth wine region to be designated an American Viticultural Area. The climate is well suited to Rhône grape varieties.

The valley is nestled between mountain ranges. It benefits from the Pacific Ocean’s influence. This creates a Mediterranean climate. The valley has a long growing season and diverse soil types. Local wineries produce wines from grapes that thrive here. These grapes include Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
