The First Texas City Refinery a significant landmark in Texas City’s history began operations in 1908. The Texas City Refining Company built this pioneering refinery. It was one of the earliest oil refineries in Texas. Initially the refinery processed 1500 barrels of crude oil daily.

Construction involved skilled craftsmen. J C Black led the team of over 100 workers. The refinery’s early equipment included eleven stills storage tanks and a boiler house. Crude oil arrived by rail. Finished products left by rail or pipeline. Products were also loaded onto tankers at the Texas City docks.

The refinery’s location proved advantageous. It was situated near the port. This ensured efficient transportation of both raw materials and refined products. The refinery’s output became crucial during both World Wars. Its petroleum products significantly contributed to national defense.

World War II dramatically increased demand. This fueled Texas City’s incredible growth. The city’s population almost tripled. Despite numerous challenges including economic shifts natural disasters accidents and ownership changes the refinery persisted. It has remained an integral part of the Texas City landscape for well over a century.

The refinery’s capacity increased substantially over time. By the 1990s daily production reached a remarkable 130000 barrels. The plaque stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the First Texas City Refinery.
