In 1978, a towering giant arose in Houston’s skyline: 1 Houston Center. 1 Houston Center, a 46-story office building, stands tall at 679 feet. It’s part of the larger Houston Center complex. The building, originally named 1 Houston Center, later became the LyondellBasell Tower. This impressive structure wasn’t just a place for business; it was a stage for a real-life “Spider-Man” drama. In 2005, French climber Alain Robert, known as “Spider-Man,” attempted to scale the LyondellBasell Tower. His daring climb ended with an arrest, adding a thrilling chapter to the building’s history. The building has been home to LyondellBasell’s Houston offices for over two decades. Even before the merger, Lyondell’s headquarters were at 1 Houston Center. The tower’s design, by Caudill Rowlett Scott, features a distinctive dark red color. This makes it stand out against the Houston sky. 1 Houston Center’s location within the Houston Center complex connects it to 2 Houston Center via sky bridges over Fannin Street. This connection, along with a planned, but never built, tram system and massive parking garage, points to the original vision of Houston Center as a “city within a city”. 1 Houston Center remains a vital part of Houston’s downtown landscape, a testament to ambitious urban planning and a silent witness to thrilling feats.
