Fort Washington Library has stood as a pillar of the Washington Heights community for over a century. Originally constructed in 1914, it has recently undergone a significant transformation. The New York Public Library celebrated the grand reopening of the Fort Washington branch in 2025, after an extensive renovation. This renovation was part of the $176 million Carnegie Renovation Program, primarily funded by the City of New York. The program focused on revitalizing branches in underserved areas. Fort Washington Library was a perfect candidate.
This wasn’t just a cosmetic facelift. The entire building was modernized, becoming fully ADA-accessible with a new elevator and entrance lift. Four new bathrooms were added, the facade restored, and energy-efficient windows installed. The building received new mechanical and electrical systems and technology upgrades throughout. One of the most dramatic changes occurred on the top floor. The former custodian’s apartment, abandoned for decades, was transformed into a vibrant space for teens. Now, the Fort Washington Library boasts dedicated floors for children, teens, and adults. Each floor has flexible programming spaces, curated collections, and comfortable new furnishings. The renovation thoughtfully preserved the original Carnegie emphasis on volume, light, and natural materials.
The meticulous restoration work earned Fort Washington Library a place on the New York State Register of Historic Places. It was even nominated for the National Registry. This recognition ensures the building’s protection for generations to come. The reopening ceremony was a joyous occasion. NYPL President Anthony W. Marx, city officials, and community members gathered to celebrate the revitalized Fort Washington Library. The restored library offers a blend of old and new. The grand staircase remains, a testament to its history, while modern amenities ensure accessibility for all. The owl from the original fireplace still perches, watching over a new generation of readers. Fort Washington Library continues to serve as a vital resource, offering everything from bilingual storytimes to college and career guidance.
