Peeking out from the riverbank, the Goldie Boathouse stands as a testament to Cambridge’s rowing legacy. This isn’t just any boathouse. It’s the oldest surviving one on the River Cam, a Grade II listed building, built in 1882.

The Goldie Boathouse serves as the fitness and administrative heart of the Cambridge University Boat Club or CUBC. Originally, it was the University boathouse. It gained its name from J. H. D. Goldie. He was the CUBC President and also lent his name to the University’s second crew.

Can you imagine the echoes of history within these walls? The Goldie Boathouse was the venue for the Cambridge University Boat Club’s first meeting in March 1883. For many years the building was used for boat storage.

Today, the boat bays have been transformed. They now house a gymnasium where ergometer and weight training happens. The Goldie Boathouse is now much more than a boat storage facility.

The Goldie Boathouse also holds administrative offices. A physiotherapy treatment center is on site. The Club’s Sports Science Research and Development program operates from here.

Think of the athletes pushing their limits within the boathouse. It includes a rowing tank. This allows for indoor water training.

The Goldie Boathouse is named after a significant figure. J. H. D. Goldie rowed in four Boat Races against Oxford from 1869 to 1872. He won three of those races.

The Goldie Boathouse has seen changes over the years. There were significant extensions and improvements in 2003 and 2013. Despite these modernisations, it remains a focal point. It is the centrepiece of rowing culture on the River Cam.

Even today, the Goldie Boathouse is easily accessible. It is a 10-minute walk from the town centre. You do not need to be a member of the university to hire the Goldie Boathouse.

The Goldie Boathouse stands as a reminder. It embodies the dedication and rich history of rowing at Cambridge University. Its walls echo with the triumphs and struggles of generations of rowers. It stands proudly as a symbol of sporting excellence.
