But the story of Hango Hill doesn’t end with death. Following Illiam Dhone’s execution the Earls of Derby built Mount Strange. This was a summerhouse or banqueting hall. Its construction signified a shift. Hango Hill was no longer used for executions. By the 19th century executions were carried out at Castle Rushen.

Bishop Barrow placed Hango Hill’s estate in trust in 1668. This trust later founded King William’s College. It sits across the road from the mound.

Today Hango Hill is more than a historic site. It’s a place of remembrance a symbol of Manx identity. Manx nationalists gather here. They hold annual speeches in the Manx language. It has even been used as a film location. A committee of the Tynwald Court worked to preserve its ancient monuments in 1891. A picture of Hango Hill even appeared on a 1966 Manx Revenue stamp.
