How about a place where faith meets history in the heart of Oxford? Welcome to the Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy. It is more than just a building. It is a vibrant center for Catholic life at the University of Oxford.

The Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy is based in the Old Palace. It is also known as Bishop King’s Palace. The building has a rich history. Construction started in 1485. Another section was added in 1622. The chaplaincy found its home here in 1920. However, the chaplaincy itself started in 1896.

The Old Palace has an interesting past. It was originally two houses. Thomas Smith, a brewer, bought the western house in 1621. From 1622 to 1628, he built a larger house to the east. It cost him £1,200. At the time, it was one of Oxford’s largest houses. Smith later moved to Brewer Street. He sold the larger house to Unton Croke in 1637. In 1638, Smith became Mayor of Oxford. The two houses were eventually joined.

The building is named after Robert King. He was the first Bishop of Oxford. Yet, there are no records of it being a bishop’s palace. It was also not a residence of Robert King.

In 1878, a group of Catholics formed The Newman Society. This would become an important part of the chaplaincy. In 1917, The Newman Trust bought the Old Palace. After renovations, chaplain Arthur Stapylton Barnes moved in. A new chapel and meeting room were built in 1931. Another new chapel was added in 1947.

The Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy façade was reconstructed in the 1950s. It became a Grade I listed building on January 12, 1954. In 1972, the house expanded. New modern buildings were added. These buildings house the chapel, Newman Room, library, and student accommodation.

Former chaplains include Ronald Knox and Crispian Hollis. Since 2007, the Jesuits have provided the chaplains. This was requested by the bishops of England and Wales.

The Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy stands on the corner of Rose Place and St Aldate’s. It is next to Christ Church Cathedral School and Campion Hall. The chaplaincy entrance is wheelchair accessible. However, there is no lift to the first floor.

The Newman Society plays a vital role here. It supports Catholic students in their faith. The society encourages their personal growth. It also promotes intellectual and spiritual development.

Imagine the lively discussions that have filled these rooms. Picture the comforting presence it offers to students. The Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy has evolved over centuries. It remains a center for faith, community, and intellectual exploration. The Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community in the heart of academic life.
