Hidden beneath the Berlin sky lies the Ziegeleisee, a tranquil lake whispering tales of industry and transformation. The Ziegeleisee wasn’t always a place for leisurely swims and sunbathing. Imagine the clang of machinery and the heat of kilns. For centuries, this area was a hive of activity, a source of the very clay that built Berlin’s iconic structures. As early as the Bronze Age, people dug the earth here, shaping clay into pots and jugs. The Ziegeleisee itself emerged around 1912. Groundwater slowly filled the void left by extensive clay excavation, creating a lake as deep as 30 to 40 meters in some places. Think of the Red City Hall and the Reinickendorfer Rathaus. These grand buildings stand as testaments to the industry that once thrived here. The bricks that form their walls were born from the earth surrounding the Ziegeleisee. Two brick factories dominated the landscape. The Kühnsche Ziegelei, established in 1840, later expanded to include a clay and cement factory. After its bankruptcy in 1880, the factory building was transformed into the “Seeschloss,” a popular leisure spot with a dance hall and bowling alley. A second, larger brickyard, built in 1854, boasted a modern ring oven capable of firing up to 12,000 bricks daily. Its towering 72-meter chimney, a symbol of the area’s industrial might, was demolished in 1932. Today, the Ziegeleisee offers a different kind of escape. The Strandbad Lübars, established in 1926, occupies the northern shore. Here, visitors can enjoy a sandy beach, a grassy lawn, and various sports facilities. The southern part of the lake, however, remains untouched. Steep banks and dense vegetation create a haven for wildlife, a reminder of the natural world that existed before industry took hold. While the sounds of machinery have faded, the Ziegeleisee retains its connection to the past. The surrounding street names echo the area’s history of clay mining. The lake itself, a product of that very industry, now serves as a place of recreation. So, as you stand by the Ziegeleisee, remember the echoes of the past.
