“Come, step inside Christ and St. Stephen’s Church. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience in the heart of New York City. Founded in 1805 as St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, it was the city’s fifth Episcopal parish. Imagine the bustling streets of early 19th-century New York. This church started as a wooden structure with a steeple at Broome and Chrystie Streets.

As businesses grew, St. Stephen’s followed its congregation uptown. In 1873, it merged with the Church of the Advent. They took the name St. Stephen’s Church. This was likely due to the funds from selling their Broome Street building. By 1897, St. Stephen’s purchased its present building on West 69th Street. It had been a suburban chapel for the Church of the Transfiguration.

Notice the architecture. William H. Day designed this picturesque building. It features a low roofline and a small tower. J. D. Fouquet remodeled it when St. Stephen’s acquired it. Christ Church, another Episcopal parish, was a rival. They were close geographically. In 1975, the two churches merged due to dwindling numbers. They became Christ and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Christ Church was later demolished.

Look around at the interior. In 2004, a ceiling collapse revealed structural issues. This led to a complete interior restoration. Evidence of original stenciling from 1876 was found inspiring the restoration. The renewed space includes a more flexible chancel and new pews. The lighting was improved, too.

Christ and St. Stephen’s Church has always supported music and the arts. At one time, it hosted an early music group and a premier brass ensemble. Original compositions were encouraged through commissions. In 1980, the church created its Fellowship in Church Music. Graduate students from top music schools joined the staff. They assisted the music director learning sacred music. The Juilliard School and Yale University were involved.

Now, turn your attention to the organ. The current organ was built in 2008 by Schoenstein & Co. It is a compact organ with 17 ranks controlled by 56 stops. The console even features details inspired by Rolls-Royce automobiles. This shows the church’s commitment to quality.

Consider the journey of Christ and St. Stephen’s Church. From its humble beginnings to its present form, it has adapted and thrived. It stands as a symbol of community and artistic expression. Its story shows resilience and a deep connection to New York City’s history. Take a moment to reflect on the beauty and history within these walls. It is a story of faith, music, and community. ”
