How much do you know about Bucharest’s railway history? Today we explore Grivița a district with deep roots in Romania’s railway industry.

Grivița centers on the Grivița Railway Yards. These yards were and still are an important landmark. Their history began in the late 19th century. They were developed to maintain and overhaul railway equipment. This equipment served Căile Ferate Române the Romanian railways.

The name Grivița has a special meaning. It reflects the Romanian spelling for Grivița a village near Pleven. There, Romanian soldiers captured an Ottoman redoubt during the Romanian War of Independence. This victory was hard-won with heavy casualties. In honor of this event Calea Târgoviștei a street in Bucharest was renamed Calea Griviței. This street led to the road connecting Bucharest with Târgoviște.

Initially Grivița served only Bucharest and its surroundings. Over time it became vital to Romania’s entire railway industry. During the interwar period the Grivița Railway Yards became a focal point for the labor movement. This was especially true after the start of the Great Depression in Romania. The Grivița Strike of 1933 and its violent suppression are still remembered in Romania.

During the communist regime the yards were renamed Grivița Roșie or Red Grivița. This name commemorated the events of 1933. The area around the yards became known as Cartierul Grivița or Grivița Borough. It was populated by workers of the Grivița Railway Yards. To this day it remains a blue-collar neighborhood.

In 1897 the CFR Workshops Atelierele CFR Grivița were established. These workshops repaired and maintained steam locomotives and passenger carriages. They became a vital part of Romania’s industrial backbone.

The Calea Griviței area retains the charm of interwar architecture. It is undergoing urban regeneration becoming a hub for restoration projects.

As you explore Grivița remember its past. It is a place where railway history labor struggles and urban renewal meet. It is a living testament to Bucharest’s industrial and social heritage.
