Envision, if you will, two quotes intertwined. They form a sphere of steel. This is the Transparente Weltkugel. It is not just art. It is a statement.

The Transparente Weltkugel stands near the Marktcenter in Breite Straße. It is a powerful symbol. It embodies Potsdam’s philosophical and political history.

This sculpture was created by Professor Günther Junge. Ulrich Dalichow helped with the technical work. The Transparente Weltkugel was erected in 1977 and 1978. For many years, it stood before the Alexander von Humboldt bookstore.

The sculpture had to be removed in 2010. This was due to construction at the Stadt- und Landesbibliothek. The Transparente Weltkugel underwent restoration. In 2015, it found a new home.

But what does it mean? The Transparente Weltkugel features two prominent quotes. Karl Marx’s eleventh Feuerbach Thesis wraps around the equator. It states: “Die Philosophen haben die Welt nur verschieden interpretiert, es kommt aber darauf an, sie zu verändern.” This translates to: “The philosophers have only interpreted the world differently, the point is to change it.”

Goethe’s final sentence from Faust II intersects it. It reads: “Alles Vergängliche ist nur ein Gleichnis.” This means: “Everything temporary is only a parable.”

These quotes represent the core of East German communist ideology. They suggest striving and creation. Also, they show the idea that knowledge and power create change. Marx criticized Feuerbach. He felt Feuerbach only explained the world. He did not revolutionize it.

The spiraling form of Marx’s quote is significant. It evokes Vladimir Tatlin’s design for the Tower of the Third International. It shows the dynamic, revolutionary spirit of communist ideology. Its former location near the library and teacher training institute was no accident. The Transparente Weltkugel complemented those buildings.

The Transparente Weltkugel weighs four tons. It has a diameter of five meters. Torsten Theel restored it. Theel runs Hofschmiede Dahlem. He also runs the Stahnsdorf workshop of Christian Röhl.

The sculpture connects Marxism to the Russian Revolution. It represents communist ideology. The two quotes hold the world together. They invite viewers to find their meaning. Even today they are relevant.

So, as you stand before the Transparente Weltkugel, consider its message. Think about the relationship between words and actions. Reflect on how we interpret and change the world. The sculpture is more than steel. It is a call to action. It is a symbol of enduring ideas.
