Established in 1836, Mount Pleasant Cemetery isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a story whispered on the wind, etched in stone. It began as a family burial ground for the Kings, dating back to 1710. Those earliest graves still rest here, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, silent witnesses to centuries of Taunton’s history. Imagine this quiet hillside back then, a small family plot under the vast New England sky. Then, in 1836, inspired by the burgeoning “garden cemetery” movement and Mount Auburn Cemetery near Boston, the King family homestead transformed. Mount Pleasant Cemetery became Taunton’s own garden of remembrance, only the fourth of its kind in the United States. Joseph Wilbar, an Easton native who settled in Taunton, designed the layout. His vision shaped these ten acres into a peaceful haven. Mount Pleasant Cemetery is more than just a resting place. It’s a living testament to changing times. Within its wrought iron gates, donated by Mrs. Edward King in 1926, lie veterans from nearly every American conflict, from King William’s War to the Korean War. Here rests General Darius Nash Couch, the highest-ranking Army officer buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, his Civil War stories now silent. Nearby, Rear Admiral Albert Loring Swasey, the highest-ranking Naval officer interred here, sleeps his final watch. Mount Pleasant Cemetery is a place of history, where the echoes of battles mingle with the whispers of peace. Walk these paths and you’ll find not only soldiers but also statesmen, mayors, and pioneers of industry, business, and the arts. Their names may be etched in stone, but their legacies live on in the city they helped to build. As you stand here, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, take a moment to reflect on the lives lived, the stories told, and the history that surrounds you.
