Gazing at Saint James Episcopal Church, one might wonder about its origins. It all began in a Denver home in April 1952. A small group, led by Archdeacon E.A.C. Smith, gathered to discuss establishing a new parish in Wheat Ridge. The idea resonated with everyone. The bishop decreed the name “Saint James,” honoring Christ’s disciple and the patron saint of Spain. Saint James Episcopal Church initially held services in the basement of the Grange Hall. Then, in October 1952, the diocese acquired land at 44th Avenue and Brentwood. A small pink farmhouse on the property became their first church building. In January 1953, Reverend C. Normal Middleton became the part-time vicar. Later, in December 1953, Reverend Walter Neary became Saint James’ first full-time vicar. The church has seen growth, loss, and change throughout the decades. Saint James Episcopal Church remains committed to being a beacon of Christ’s love within the community. It is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado, under Bishop Kym Lucas. The diocese is part of The Episcopal Church, a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
