Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Dubai’s Gold Souk, the Women’s Museum, Bait Al Banat, whispers stories of resilience and empowerment. “The Girls’ House,” as Bait Al Banat translates, isn’t just a building. It is a testament to the indelible mark Emirati women have left on their culture and society. Officially opened in 2012 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Women’s Museum has blossomed under the leadership of Professor Rafia Ghubash. Her vision was to create a space that not only preserves women’s history but also dismantles stereotypes. The museum, housed in a building from the 1950s, offers a journey through time. Inside the Women’s Museum, two galleries pulse with creative energy. Gallery 1 showcases rotating exhibitions of female artists, both established and emerging, while Gallery 2 hosts international collaborations and a permanent exhibition celebrating Sheikh Zayed’s contributions to women’s empowerment. This exhibit features artwork interwoven with his quotes on women’s empowerment, photographs and videos of women’s festivals, and unique handcrafted prints blending his poetry with powerful imagery. Delve into the Diwan Ousha Bint Khalifa Al Suwidi Room, an homage to the celebrated poetess known as “The Girl of the Arabs.” This space utilizes sound and graphics to bring her story to life, connecting her legacy to the accomplishments of contemporary UAE women poets. The Women’s Studies Centre on the second floor offers a rich archive and research hub, providing invaluable resources for understanding women’s roles in the UAE and the broader Arab world. For younger visitors, the Fatima Bint Al Zeina Children’s Corner, named after one of Dubai’s last traditional Quranic school teachers, sparks curiosity about arts and heritage. Even the Um Al Duwais Perfume and Gift Shop tells a story. It offers a fragrant journey through Emirati culture with its array of traditional Arabian scents and oils, contemporary perfumes, and locally crafted incense. The Women’s Museum is more than just a museum. It’s a living narrative, a tribute to the strength, creativity, and enduring spirit of Emirati women. Their influence echoes throughout its halls, reminding us that their contributions are woven into the very fabric of Dubai’s vibrant story.
