“A summer residence for archbishops” you whisper intrigued. That’s what Palazzo Leone da Perego once was. Right here before us stands a testament to history. This stunning palace in Legnano boasts a rich past. It wasn’t always this grand structure.

The original Palazzo Leone da Perego. A medieval building. It probably dates back to the 13th century. Some historians even suggest the 9th century. Archbishop Leone da Perego himself. A man of power and influence in Milan. He made this place his summer retreat. A period of great splendor lasting until the 15th century. Imagine the lavish parties. The important guests. The whispered secrets within its walls.

But the story doesn’t end there. In 1361 Archbishop Roberto Visconti sought refuge here. He escaped the devastating plague. Some say he died within these very walls. A chilling thought. The palazzo also played a part in religious matters. Archbishop Francesco I da Parma used the palace to grant indulgences. He did this in 1297. He encouraged donations for the church of San Pietro di Saronno.

The palace shared a courtyard. It was known as the “Corte Arcivescovile”. The courtyard was adjacent to Palazzo Visconti. Think of the intrigue. The power plays. The close proximity between these two mighty buildings.

A significant change occurred in 1898. The medieval palace was demolished. It was rebuilt. But some original decorations survived. Two Visconti coats of arms remain. One is at the entrance on Corso Magenta. This marble coat of arms dates back to 1277. A connection to Ottone Visconti. The other is inside the palazzo. These are physical links to a bygone era. They offer a glimpse into the history of this remarkable place. Palazzo Visconti underwent significant reconstruction in 1937. The gateway connecting Corso Magenta to the archiepiscopal court was rebuilt in 1890.

Today Palazzo Leone da Perego stands as a museum. It is a cherished part of Legnano’s cultural heritage. It is a reminder of the powerful archbishops. The devastating plague. The ebb and flow of history itself. It is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a story waiting to be rediscovered. Each stone whispers tales of the past. Let its grandeur inspire you. Let it transport you back in time.
