Picture this. You are standing before the magnificent Tabernacle Baptist Church. Its history unfolds before you like a captivating novel.

The Tabernacle Baptist Church. It wasn’t always here on Second Avenue. Its story began in 1839 on Mulberry Street. Members of the Mulberry-Street Church established this vital community hub. It served as a beacon of hope for many.

Over time this important church moved. By December 22 1850 it had a new home at 166 Second Avenue. Rev Edward Lathrop presided over its growth. The church flourished. Its wealth and influence were remarkable. It was one of the wealthiest Baptist societies in the United States.

However time and changing demographics brought challenges. As wealthier members moved uptown the church faced financial hardship. A New York Times article in 1896 documented the foreclosure of its property. The changing city impacted the church. Wealthier members left. Those who remained struggled to maintain the building.

But the spirit of the Tabernacle Baptist Church persevered. From 1928 to 1930 the old building was demolished. In its place rose a fifteen-story skyscraper. This “skyscraper church” Warren Hall incorporated the church into its design. Henry Kaufman led this ambitious project. Architect Emery Roth designed the impressive building.

The Tabernacle Baptist Church played a crucial role in the 1940s. It served Italian Polish and Russian Baptist congregations. It was a diverse and welcoming place. Its legacy continues to this day. You can still see the words BAPTIST TABERNACLE over the doorway at Warren Hall. Now owned by Urban Outfitters the building still bears testament to the church’s remarkable history.

The Tabernacle Baptist Church. A testament to faith resilience and the enduring power of community. Its story is woven into the very fabric of New York City. A story of change adaptation and unwavering devotion. It serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring human spirit.
