Have you ever wondered what peace looks like? Many would say it resides within the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This majestic mosque can accommodate over 40,000 visitors. The main prayer hall alone holds more than 7,000 worshippers. Two smaller prayer halls each have a capacity of 1,500. Over 100,000 tons of Greek and Macedonian marble were used in its construction. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to artistic collaboration. Artisans from all corners of the globe, including India, Pakistan, China, the UK, Egypt, Turkey, and Germany, contributed their skills. Imagine 1,300 Iranian craftsmen hand-knotting the world’s largest carpet. It was so large it had to be transported in pieces and reassembled within the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The mosque’s beauty extends beyond its size and materials. It represents a beautiful blend of Mameluke, Ottoman, and Fatimid architectural styles. Eighty-two domes, primarily clad in white marble, crown the structure. Each dome is adorned with onion-shaped crowns and crescent-shaped finials decorated with gold-glass mosaic. The largest dome sits majestically above the main prayer hall. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque welcomes everyone, regardless of faith. Free guided tours are offered in English and Arabic. It’s open from Saturday to Thursday, 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and on Fridays from 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM. Women are provided with Abayas, and men with long trousers to maintain the mosque’s decorum. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was the vision of the UAE’s first president, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He selected its location at the entrance of Abu Dhabi island, between Musaffah and Maqta Bridges. He provided detailed architectural guidance, ensuring the mosque would become a symbol of peace and tolerance. Sheikh Zayed’s final wish was to be buried in the courtyard of this magnificent mosque. His resting place adds another layer of significance to this already extraordinary place. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands as a symbol of unity, peace, and the remarkable achievements of human collaboration. It invites all who enter to experience a sense of tranquility and wonder.
