Journey back to 1884. Imagine the excitement as Athens welcomed its first railway terminal, the Σταθμός Πελοποννήσου. The Peloponnese Railway Station, a grand structure designed by French engineers Alfred Rondel and Abel Gotteland, stood as a symbol of progress. Later, the renowned 19th-century architect Ernst Ziller remodeled it, adding his unique touch. This station connected Athens to Piraeus and the Peloponnese region, opening up new possibilities for travel and trade. The Piraeus, Athens and Peloponnese Railways, or SPAP, was the company behind this ambitious project. The Σταθμός Πελοποννήσου became a bustling hub, the heart of Athenian rail travel. In 1904, the Larissa Station opened nearby, serving lines to northern Greece. For over a century, the Peloponnese Railway Station witnessed the ebb and flow of history. It saw the SPAP become an independent company, struggle with debts, and eventually come under government control. During World War II, the station played a vital role, transporting troops and supplies. The war left its mark, with significant damage to the rail network. Despite setbacks, the station continued to serve the city until its closure in 2005. The final train departed on August 7th, marking the end of an era. Today, the Σταθμός Πελοποννήσου stands silent, a protected building of special architectural value. Its legacy lives on, a reminder of Athens’ rich railway history. Future plans for the station include hosting conferences and other events, ensuring this historic landmark continues to play a role in the city’s future.
