Within the hallowed halls of Oxford University, nestled within the Keble Road Triangle, stands the Jenkin Building. This unassuming structure holds a significant place in the history of engineering science at Oxford. The Jenkin Building is named after Charles Frewen Jenkin, the first Professor of Engineering Science at Oxford, appointed in 1908. His grandson, Lord Jenkin of Roding, continued the family’s legacy of engineering excellence. The building itself is a testament to Jenkin’s pioneering spirit. It served as one of the initial homes for the Honour School of Natural Science (Engineering Science), formally established on 2 February 1909. The department expanded over the years. New structures like the Thom Building, built in 1963, joined the Jenkin Building on the Keble Road Triangle. The Jenkin Building is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents the genesis of engineering studies at Oxford. It symbolizes the enduring pursuit of knowledge and innovation. The spirit of Charles Frewen Jenkin lives on within these walls, inspiring generations of engineers to shape the world we live in.
