“Did you know that a miniature Statue of Liberty stands proudly in Austin Texas?” I ask.

Right before you stands a bronze replica a smaller sister to the iconic New York original. It’s not as tall as the one in New York Harbor but it holds the same symbolic weight. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a piece of history a testament to the Boy Scouts of America’s 40th anniversary.

In 1950 the Boy Scouts launched a project titled “Strengthen the Arm of Liberty”. They commissioned about 200 replicas of the Statue of Liberty. These were placed across the United States. The Austin Statue of Liberty is one of them. It stands on a base of Texas limestone. A time capsule was originally placed with it. It was later moved to a Boy Scout camp near Bastrop for later opening.

The statue’s journey is fascinating. Initially it stood southwest of the Texas Capitol building. Later it was moved in the 1990s as part of the grounds restoration project. The move allowed the preservation of the South Grounds’ 1888-1915 appearance. During the relocation preservationists made a surprising discovery. They unearthed a time capsule! This capsule contained artifacts from that era. This small but mighty Statue of Liberty is more than just a replica. It’s a reminder of a national celebration a symbol of American ideals and a fascinating historical artifact. The time capsule found during its move adds another layer to its tale. It speaks to the lasting impact of the Boy Scouts’ project and the statue’s unique place in Texas history. Now isn’t that a story to tell?
