Tucked away in the heart of Jerusalem, Sakker Garden offers a surprising tranquility. Sakker Garden is a sprawling green oasis amidst the bustling city. It’s the largest public park in central Jerusalem, a welcome respite from the stone and history that surrounds it. Did you know this peaceful haven was once a makeshift airstrip? During the Israeli War of Independence, when Jerusalem was under siege, light aircraft landed here. Imagine the scene: the roar of engines replacing birdsong, the hurried activity a stark contrast to the quiet picnics enjoyed here today. Sakker Garden has seen quite a transformation. Before it became an airstrip, the area housed a concrete and construction materials factory, even serving as a weapons cache during the 1936–1939 Arab revolt. Can you picture that, amidst the children’s laughter and the rustling leaves? In 1949, the area began its journey to becoming the park we see today. Minister of Agriculture Levi Eshkol envisioned turning the rocky valley into farmland. Members of Kibbutz Ma’ale HaHamisha cultivated vegetables here, irrigated by Jerusalem’s wastewater. But the vision for a green space for the city persisted. By 1955, the decision was made to transform the valley into an urban park. The park as we know it began to take shape in 1960, thanks to a donation from Harry Sacher, a British Zionist activist. Sakker Garden is named in his honor. The park officially opened in 1965. Today, Sakker Garden offers a wealth of activities. Stroll along its paths, enjoy a picnic on the grass, or let your children explore the playgrounds. Admire the Bonshō, a Japanese peace bell inscribed with messages of peace in Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese, and English. Reflect on the verse from Psalms engraved upon it: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; serene will be those who love you.” From airstrip to farmland to urban oasis, Sakker Garden stands as a testament to the ever-evolving story of Jerusalem. It’s a place where history, nature, and community intertwine. So, breathe in the fresh air, soak up the tranquility, and enjoy this vibrant green heart of Jerusalem.
