“Lost in prayer,” a man murmured, clutching his misbaha. He stood outside Masjid Al-Ajlan, oblivious to the bustling city around him. Masjid Al-Ajlan. A beacon of faith, history, and community for over 350 years. It stands proudly in Riyadh, a testament to Najdi architecture. Built of mud and stone, its roof crafted from tamarisk wood and palm fronds, Masjid Al-Ajlan exudes a timeless aura. Imagine stepping back in time, to an era when this mosque served as the heart of the al-Sabbakh Neighborhood. Children gathered here, their voices echoing in the courtyard as they memorized the Quran. The air filled with the rhythmic chants of prayer and the murmur of discussions, as community members sought solutions to their disputes. Masjid Al-Ajlan wasn’t merely a place of worship. It was a center for learning, a hub for social interaction, a pillar of the community. Its location, outside the old city walls on King Abdulaziz Road, speaks to its historical significance. Originally situated in the old farming area, approximately 7.5 km southeast of Buraydah City Municipality, it served the rural community. The mosque is surprisingly intimate. Its ninety square meters can accommodate only about thirty-three worshippers. Visualize the two aisles parallel to the Qibla wall. Feel the openness of the courtyard, surrounded on three sides by protective walls. Hear the gentle splashing of water in the ablution areas. Note the modern restroom, a subtle nod to the present day, alongside the traditional iron minaret on the northern side. Time took its toll on Masjid Al-Ajlan. But the spirit of this sacred place endured. In 2018, a new chapter began. Masjid Al-Ajlan was selected for the prestigious Mohammed Bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques. This restoration breathed new life into the aging structure. It ensured that Masjid Al-Ajlan would continue to serve the community, a beacon of faith, for generations to come.
