Deep within Chennai lies a guardian. She protects against unseen evils. I am speaking of Vembuli Amma.

Welcome friends to the sacred grounds of Vembuli Amma Temple. This temple is a vibrant testament to Chennai’s rich religious heritage. It is a place where faith intertwines with history.

The story of Vembuli Amma is captivating. Legend says Vembuli Amman protects the village. She keeps evil forces out. These forces may be spirits. They may be diseases like smallpox. This is why Vembuli Amman appears ferocious. She has many hands holding weapons. She destroys evil.

Originally Vembuli Amman resided under a neem tree. She revealed her power by granting boons. She blessed her devotees. It is believed she never lets down devotees. They must pray with true love. Earthen cooking stoves near the entrance are proof of her power.

The temple’s history stretches back at least 150 years. Maybe even 200 years. Though, it has been rebuilt in recent times using bricks and cement. An inscription from 1823 CE tells of a donation. Visaka Venkatachalam and his family gave to the temple. They helped excavate a tank.

The Vembuli Amma temple faces east. A trance arch stands on the north side. Vembuli Amman sits on a pedestal. She holds a Trishul in her right hand. Surrounding the main shrine are other deities. These include Nagars and Vinayagar. You will also see Sri Valli Devasea Subramaniyars. Kala Bairavar and Navagrahas are also present.

Notice the stucco images on the mandapam. They show Amman in various forms. The sanctum sanctorum sits on a raised level. It is about three feet high. The temple includes a sanctum. There is an Ardha mandapam too. Do not forget the mukha mandapam. A dravida Vimana crowns the sanctum.

Special poojas mark Tuesdays and Fridays at Vembuli Amma Temple. Adi month Fridays are important too. The annual festival is a grand affair. Sankata hara Chaturthi is celebrated here. As are Vinayagar Chaturthi and Skandar Sashti.

Come experience the divine presence of Vembuli Amma. Feel the energy that has protected this village for centuries. Let the stories of faith resonate within you. May Vembuli Amman bless you always. This Nattar Deivam is truly special.
