Did the Kurfürstin Sophie Statue ever imagine she’d be standing here, overlooking Herrenhausen Gardens? The Kurfürstin Sophie Statue commemorates Sophia of the Palatinate, also known as Electress Sophia of Hanover. She was born in The Hague in 1630 and became Electress of Hanover in 1692. She shaped Herrenhausen Gardens with passion. The gardens expanded fourfold during her lifetime. Sophia, a granddaughter of James VI and I of England, was named heiress presumptive to the British throne. The Act of Settlement of 1701 declared her next in line. This was due to her Protestant faith. The statue marks the very spot where Sophia suffered a stroke and died in 1714. She died in the gardens she loved, just weeks before she would have become Queen of Great Britain. Her son, George Louis, ascended to the British throne as George I soon after. The Kurfürstin Sophie Statue is more than just a statue. It’s a testament to a remarkable woman who almost became queen. It’s a reminder of her influence on Hanover and the intertwined history of Britain and Germany.
