Cathcart Baptist Church stands proudly on Merrylee Road. It’s a beacon of faith and fellowship in the heart of Glasgow. The church isn’t just about Sunday services. It’s a place of constant activity.
Since 2017 the church has cultivated an urban orchard. Apple and plum trees thrive alongside seasonal fruits and vegetables. There’s even a bug hotel and a hedgehog house. Imagine the children’s delight in helping harvest the fruit. Their efforts contribute to the making of delicious homemade jams.
Another remarkable project is ‘The Shed’. Funded partly by Glasgow City Council this large log cabin provides tools and space for crafting. The shed fosters friendships and collaboration. It connects with various community groups including Volunteer Glasgow Befriending groups and Alcoholics Anonymous. The patio linking the shed the orchard and one of the church halls creates a delightful space for gatherings.
The church plays a crucial role in combating loneliness. Initiatives like the afternoon tea project offer a lovely setting for conversations and connections. The Renew/Wellbeing Cafe provides a space for shared hobbies and activities. It features a quiet area for prayer and reflection. The church partners with Cathcart Trinity and Cathcart UF Churches in this vital project.
In response to the cost of living crisis Cathcart Baptist Church opened a Warm Hub. From November 2022 through February 2023 the church offered a warm welcome. Teas coffees and biscuits were available. Wifi was offered alongside comfortable seating. The sanctuary and cafe spaces created a comforting atmosphere for those seeking refuge from the cold.
