Observe these twin steel tubes. The sculpture before you is “Kepler trifft Kopernikus”. It was created in 1989 by Rainer Tappeser. This artwork invites contemplation about the intersection of space, astronomy, and human perception.
Let’s consider the title. Nikolaus Kopernikus, lived from 1473 to 1543. Johannes Kepler, lived from 1571 to 1630. They could not have actually met. Yet, both men dedicated their lives to astronomy.
Copernicus and Kepler studied movements in our solar system. They also studied the stars and galaxies. These movements are dictated by gravity. Einstein theorized that gravity warps space.
The “Kepler trifft Kopernikus” sculpture consists of two monumental steel tubes. They are closed and straight. One tube is fixed in the ground. It points vertically. The other tube sits atop a cylindrical building. It aligns north to south.
These tubes stand a few meters apart. They do not touch. Tappeser often explores spatial experience in his works. He engages with cardinal directions. Thus, associating him with Copernicus and Kepler feels natural.
Tappeser seems to suggest a meeting between these astronomers within the sculpture itself. He brings their ideas together in art. The cylindrical corner design contrasts with the adjacent building. The Bahlo-Köhnke-Stosberg architectural group created that building in 1988 and 1989. It was built for the Steinhoff furniture store. It is located at Braunschweiger Platz 2 in Hanover.
Kepler’s work laid foundations for Newton’s theory of universal gravitation. This theory united earthly gravity with astronomical behaviors. Kepler was a German astronomer. He was also a mathematician and astrologer.
He is known for his laws of planetary motion. His books include Astronomia nova, Harmonice Mundi, and Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae.
Kepler was born prematurely on December 27, 1571. This happened in Weil der Stadt. It is near Stuttgart. As a child, he had smallpox. This left him with crippled hands and weak vision.
His mother introduced him to astronomy. She showed him the Great Comet of 1577. At age nine, he saw a lunar eclipse.
Kepler’s mother was accused of witchcraft. He hired lawyers to defend her. She was imprisoned for 14 months.
Kepler started as a math teacher. He taught in Graz, Austria. Later, he became the chief mathematician of Emperor Rudolf II. He met Tycho Brahe in Prague. They cooperated fruitfully.
Brahe’s planetary data helped Kepler make his discoveries. Kepler was deeply religious. He saw his laws of planetary motion as reflections of God’s design.
Kepler also contributed to optics. He formulated the inverse-square law of light intensity. He invented a refracting telescope. NASA named its planet-hunting space telescope “Kepler”.
