Did you know Yubileyny was once a bustling town? Yubileyny a name that echoes with the celebrations of a past era. It stands as a testament to a unique chapter in Moscow’s history a story woven from military secrets and the dreams of ordinary people. Before it became Yubileyny this land held the quiet villages of Bolshevo Maksimkovo and Lapino-Spasskoye. These villages had a rich history stretching back to the 16th century. Bolshevo for example was owned by the Odoyevskys. Their connection to the land dates back to 1585.

Imagine the lives of those who lived in these villages long before the construction of the Moscow Ring Road. Their days were shaped by the rhythms of rural life. The arrival of two railway lines in the 19th century marked a turning point. These lines became important parts of Yubileyny’s later landscape. They formed the southern and eastern boundaries.

The real transformation of Yubileyny began in the 20th century. In 1939 the Moscow Military Engineering College opened in Bolshevo. It was later transferred to Leningrad. This event paved the way for the establishment of the 4th Scientific Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense. This institute was key to advancing Soviet rocket and space technology. This was a closely guarded secret. The work done there shaped the course of the Space Race.

By the 1970s Yubileyny was a growing community. Several closed military communities developed. These communities had their own infrastructure. In 1972 Bolshevo-1 a closed settlement was established. It served troop unit #25840. This settlement soon became the foundation of modern Yubileyny. Then in 1989 Bolshevo-1 opened to the public. On May 25 1992 it gained town status. The name Yubileyny was chosen to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Yubileyny flourished for a time. It grew close to Korolyov another dynamically developing city. In fact Yubileyny became almost entirely surrounded by Korolyov. A small strip of land along the Yaroslavl Highway was the only exception. This strip ensured Yubileyny had a border. It wasn’t a border with Korolyov but with the highway itself. This detail underlines the complicated process of city planning and expansion. Unfortunately this unique situation didn’t last. In June 2014 Yubileyny was merged into Korolyov. Its identity as a separate town was lost.

The story of Yubileyny is a story of transformation. A tale of shifting borders and evolving identities. From its humble beginnings as a collection of small villages to its brief existence as a vibrant town its legacy is tied to defense technological advances and the ambitions of a nation. Yubileyny’s history is a fascinating piece of Moscow’s broader narrative a story worth remembering.
