Beyond the sandy expanse, imagine a tale woven through time at Rockaway Beach. This beach is more than just sand and surf. It is a place steeped in history and vibrant culture.

Rockaway Beach is on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. It stretches impressively from Beach 3rd to Beach 153rd Streets. Did you know it is the largest urban beach in the United States?

Once upon a time, this area was two separate hamlets. They were known as Holland and Hammels. Michael P. Holland bought land in 1857 and named it after himself. Louis Hammel, a German immigrant, bought land east of Holland. In 1878, he gave land to the New York railway. It became Hammels. These hamlets merged in 1897 and became the Village of Rockaway Beach.

In the early 1900s, Rockaway Beach opened to many people. Amusement parks and hotels attracted visitors. It was known as New York’s Playground. Rockaways Playland was a major draw after being built in 1901.

The NYPD even made rules for beachgoers in 1904. They censored bathing suits and photography. Women in bathing suits could not leave the beachfront.

The Atom Smasher roller coaster was very popular. It was even in a movie in 1952. An Olympic-size swimming pool was built and served the community for 80 years.

Robert Moses changed Rockaway Beach in the 1930s. He built the Marine Parkway Bridge in 1937. The Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge followed in 1939. These bridges made Rockaway a residential area. People could commute to work more easily.

Moses’ projects also hurt the community. He planned the Shore Front Parkway. This project would have connected Staten Island to the Hamptons. It was never fully built. But a portion of it was made in 1939. It is known as the road from nowhere to nowhere.

Other recreational areas drew tourists away. Businesses closed and Rockaway declined. The city built Hammel Houses to revitalize the area. These social housing projects changed the community.

Today, Rockaway Beach is a destination for day trippers. People come to surf and scuba dive. Some call it Williamsburg on the Rockaways. Hurricane Sandy devastated the community in 2012. Reconstruction efforts have restored the beach.

Rockaway Beach is known as the Irish Riviera. This is because of its large Irish American population. The community has over 13000 residents.

Patti Smith wrote about living in Rockaway Beach. The Ramones wrote a song called “Rockaway Beach.” It was their highest-charting single. Woody Allen’s movie “Radio Days” was filmed here.

Rockaway Beach has a rich past and present. It is a place of recreation and community. Its story is etched in the sands. Its spirit lives on in its residents and visitors. As you stand here, remember the echoes of laughter. Remember the waves of change that have shaped this iconic beach.
