Have you ever wondered about the silent stories whispered by old bricks? Look at the Kurfürstenstift in Potsdam. This building breathes history. It stands before you a testament to change and resilience.

Originally a silk factory built in the early 19th century the Kurfürstenstift wasn’t always a senior residence. The factory belonged to C Stieff. A new factory building was constructed in 1831 for Pignol & Heiland. Richard Hansen designed it. About 20 years later apartments were added to the east wing. The building adapted to the times. Remodeling started in 1910. Load-bearing walls were removed. An iron structure replaced them. The ceiling between the second and third floors disappeared. This created larger spaces suitable for taller looms.

In 1925 the Berlin pharmaceutical company Taeschner bought the building. The architects Otto Rudolf Salvisberg and Paul Baumgarten redesigned it for pharmaceutical production. The famous cough medicine Pertussin was made here. Taeschner produced Pertussin until 1951. The company was nationalized after that. In 1971 the VEB Präzisionsschlösser took over the factory. The eastern section with the apartments became office space. After reunification BAB-Ikon Cylinderschlösser produced locks here until 2005.

After extensive renovations the Kurfürstenstift opened in 2009. The old factory building has been transformed into a senior residence. It’s a place where history and modern comfort coexist. Notice the blend of architectural styles. The original structure has been preserved. Modern features like accessibility are seamlessly integrated. The building truly tells a story of Potsdam’s industrial past and present.

The Kurfürstenstift is more than just a senior residence. It’s a living museum showcasing Potsdam’s industrial heritage. It stands as a symbol of adaptation and innovation. As you walk away remember the diverse lives and businesses housed within these walls. The Kurfürstenstift stands as a reminder of the ever-changing face of Potsdam. Each brick holds a piece of the city’s vibrant past.
