What if I told you that this very spot, the Boston University Student Village, almost didn’t exist? This bustling hub, affectionately nicknamed “StuVi” by its residents, sits on land once occupied by a National Guard Armory, used mostly by the university for storage. Imagine that: a place echoing with the quiet hum of potential, filled with forgotten relics instead of the energy of nearly a thousand students. The Boston University Student Village officially opened its doors to juniors and seniors in the fall of 2000 at 10 Buick Street, offering apartment-style living for 817 residents. A few years later, in 2002, John Hancock Insurance stepped in, their sponsorship transforming the village into the multimillion-dollar complex we see today. This transformation was a game-changer for Boston University. It marked a shift from a commuter campus to a residential one, finally allowing the university to house the vast majority of its students who desired on-campus living. No more shuffling freshmen into nearby hotels, a practice long criticized by the student newspaper. The Boston University Student Village wasn’t just about housing. It was about fostering a sense of community, bridging the divide between the east and west campuses. And then came Phase II, which included the Agganis Arena and the FitRec Center. The Agganis Arena, named after the legendary BU athlete Harry Agganis, opened in 2005. This 7,200-seat venue quickly became the new home for Terrier hockey games, also hosting concerts and other major events. Just a few months later, the Fitness and Recreation Center, or FitRec, threw open its doors. The FitRec immediately drew huge crowds of students, eager to experience its state-of-the-art facilities. Imagine swimming in the competition pool, scaling the towering rock climbing wall, or simply relaxing in the lazy river. The Boston University Student Village continued to grow. In 2009, a stunning new 26-story dorm tower, known as StuVi2 or StuVii, was completed. This tower, housing another 960 students, was described by The Boston Globe as “perhaps the most opulent residence hall to ever grace the local college landscape.” This impressive addition cemented the Boston University Student Village’s reputation as a truly remarkable residential complex. There were even plans for a StuVi3, imagined to nestle between the existing buildings. Unfortunately, the Great Recession put those plans on hold. But even without a third installment, the Boston University Student Village stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to its students, providing not just housing but a vibrant hub for community and recreation.
