Picture this. You stand before the AVUS-Tribüne a relic of Berlin’s roaring twenties and thirties. This isn’t just any grandstand. It witnessed history unfold at breakneck speed.

The AVUS-Tribüne is more than concrete and steel. It’s a monument to the Avus racetrack. Europe’s first purpose-built motorway it was also a legendary racing circuit. Imagine the thrill of speed. Thousands cheered as drivers pushed their machines to the limit. The grandstand itself was part of a 1936 revamp. An Art Deco control tower was added. The circuit briefly became the fastest in the world.

Built between 1936 and 1937 by architects Fritz Wilms and Walter Bettenstaedt the AVUS-Tribüne is a masterpiece of its time. Its imposing structure is 240 meters long and 9 meters high. It hosted countless races. Motorcycle races Formula One events even land speed record attempts. But time takes its toll. After its last race in 1998 the AVUS-Tribüne fell into disrepair. It became a haunting reminder of a bygone era.

Yet hope remains. A private investor purchased the listed historical building. An ambitious renovation project began in 2019. It was completed in 2021 just in time for the racetrack’s 100th anniversary. The dilapidated grandstand now houses a glass-walled event venue. A bar overlooks the Autobahn. Offices are nestled beneath the stands. Vintage cars are displayed as a high-speed drive-by museum.

The AVUS-Tribüne’s transformation is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to Berlin’s resilience. A symbol of its ability to preserve its past while embracing the future. Stand here. Feel the history. Hear the ghosts of roaring engines. The AVUS-Tribüne’s story is far from over. It’s a legend reborn.
