Doesn’t the Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology sound like something straight out of a sci-fi movie? It is a hub of innovation nestled here in Chennai. The Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology, or CEWiT, is not just another research lab. It is a non-profit research society of IIT Madras. It was founded on July 7, 2004.

CEWiT’s mission is to spearhead technological advancements for the Indian wireless industry. Its location is easily pinpointed at coordinates 12°59′27″N 80°14′32″E. The organization receives vital support from the Ministry of Communication and IT. The Indian telecom industry also contributes to its funding.

CEWiT focuses on addressing the unique needs of the Indian market. It achieves this through cutting-edge research and the creation of valuable solutions. They are deeply involved in shaping the future of wireless communication. CEWiT actively contributes to global standards for 4G and 5G technologies. This includes 3GPP LTE, LTE-Advanced, NR, and IEEE 802.16m WiMAX.

In 2018, a significant initiative was launched. CEWiT joined forces with several prestigious institutions. These included IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, SAMEER, and IISc. Together, they secured funding from the Indian Department of Telecommunications. The goal was ambitious to build an indigenous 5G testbed for the Indian telecom market.

CEWiT plays a crucial role in India’s wireless R&D ecosystem. CEWiT provides consultancy and technical services to telecom companies. These services cover 4G technologies like LTE and LTE-Advanced. They also extend to the rapidly evolving 5G technologies. The center has developed simulators and testbeds. These resources greatly assist the industry. They aid in R&D efforts and capacity building activities.

CEWiT’s work is sustained by government grants. They also get project funding and license fees from the industry. A major grant comes from the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY). A key project focuses on 5G research and developing next-generation solutions for the Indian market. The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology funds this. The project started in September 2015. It has a duration of 36 months. The funding outlay is significant. It includes Rs 1224.59 Lakhs from DeitY and Rs.348.5 Lakhs from other sources.

The implementing agency for this project is, of course, the Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology. CEWiT’s vision is clear. They want to provide technological leadership. They want to address Indian market needs through advanced R&D. They also aim to create value. CEWiT strives to be a neutral partner. They assist industry stakeholders and policymakers. They offer guidance on various technological aspects.

CEWiT is located on the III Floor, IITM Research Park, Kanagam Road, Taramani, Chennai. CEWiT remains at the forefront of wireless innovation. It shapes the future of connectivity in India and beyond. CEWiT is a beacon of progress, driving advancements. Its contributions are vital for India’s technological landscape.
