The story of Detroit Collegiate Preparatory Academy at Northwestern begins well over a century ago. Detroit was growing rapidly and its schools were feeling the strain. Northwestern High School opened its doors in 1912. It had 40 rooms and over 400 students.
Northwestern quickly became a vital part of the community. It was more than just a school. It was a place where young people could learn grow and prepare for the future. Between 1914 and 1939 the student body increased tenfold. The school even absorbed some of its feeder schools to meet the growing demand.
Detroit Collegiate Preparatory Academy at Northwestern has a proud athletic tradition. For over a century the school has produced outstanding student athletes. These athletes have excelled at the collegiate level and beyond. Colt alumni have even claimed NCAA championships and Olympic gold medals.
In 2007-2008 Northwestern High won the Detroit Public Secondary Schools Athletic League Championship in both men’s basketball and football. Since 1919 Northwestern basketball teams have claimed a total of sixteen DPSSAL titles. The school also won the 1928 Michigan High School Athletic Association basketball championship.
Many notable figures have walked the halls of Detroit Collegiate Preparatory Academy at Northwestern. This includes legendary Motown musicians like Mary Wells and James Jamerson. The school has also produced athletes lawmakers and civil rights leaders.
The original Northwestern High School building was replaced in 1980. A newer larger building opened just to the east. In 2011 the academic program at Northwestern High School closed. The Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School program relocated into the main academic part of the facility. Because of the importance of the Northwestern name to DPS and the community this new program was named Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School at Northwestern.
