Have you ever considered the strategic brilliance of a bastion? Here at St. George’s Bastion, we’re standing on a pivotal piece of Chennai’s history. St. George’s Bastion isn’t just a picturesque ruin. It’s a testament to military ingenuity and a silent witness to centuries of change. St. George’s Bastion, part of the formidable Fort St. George, stands as a quadrilateral giant. It is one of the few sections of the fort whose construction date we know with certainty. Although now hidden from view, the southern face of St. George’s Bastion once bore an inscription. It proudly proclaimed its creation in 1773, during the reign of King George III, under the watchful eye of Governor Alex Wynch and the design genius of Lieutenant Colonel Ross. Ross, you see, was the mastermind behind much of what we admire within Fort St. George today. St. George’s Bastion played a crucial role in the dramatic French siege of Madras in 1758. The French forces, under the command of Lally, targeted the western face of the fort, where St. George’s Bastion stood guard. This area, closest to Black Town, witnessed intense fighting. Thousands of terrified residents fled their homes, seeking refuge within the fort’s walls. A daring British regiment, led by Colonel William Draper, launched a counterattack from St. George’s Gate. The ensuing skirmishes raged for two grueling months before the French finally retreated. The siege exposed the vulnerability of the fort’s western defenses. This prompted a critical review and led to the very construction of St. George’s Bastion as we see it today. Colonel Ross, arriving in Madras in 1770, reshaped the fort from a half-decagon to a semi-octagon. His most significant alterations occurred on the western face, where he created St. George’s Bastion. So, as you gaze upon St. George’s Bastion, remember, it’s more than just bricks and stone. It is a symbol of resilience, a product of strategic planning, and a stage for some of Chennai’s most defining moments.
