Did this unassuming church once hold the largest congregation in Milan? It’s true. This is Cappella di San Marco. It might not seem like much now, but for a time it was second only to the Duomo in size and grandeur. Cappella di San Marco has a long and fascinating past, stretching back to the 13th century. The Augustinians, a religious order, built the original structure. But the story really begins even earlier with a gesture of gratitude to the city of Venice. See, Venice had come to Milan’s aid during a conflict with Frederick Barbarossa. To commemorate this alliance, the church was dedicated to Venice’s patron saint, Saint Mark. Over the centuries, Cappella di San Marco underwent several transformations. During the 17th century, it received a dramatic makeover in the Baroque style, a period when it actually surpassed the Duomo in size. Imagine that! A young Mozart even graced this very church during his travels. He resided in the monastery here for three months in 1770. And years later, in 1874, Cappella di San Marco witnessed another historic event. Verdi’s Requiem, composed in honor of the late Milanese poet Alessandro Manzoni, premiered here on the anniversary of Manzoni’s death. Today, while its Baroque splendor has faded, Cappella di San Marco still holds onto whispers of its past. Step inside, and you might just hear the faint echoes of Mozart’s melodies or the mournful strains of Verdi’s Requiem.
