Ever wondered what lies beneath your feet as you stroll through a park? Today, we explore Spindelmannpark in Essen. It is a place where history and recreation intertwine.

Spindelmannpark wasn’t always a park. It was once the Südfriedhof Altenessen, the South Cemetery of Altenessen. In the 1970s, the cemetery was decommissioned. Then, in the 1990s, it was transformed into the park we see today.

Notice the old trees and wide meadows? These are remnants of its past. But look closer. You will see some gravestones. These stones, mainly in the western part of the park, serve as silent reminders of the park’s former life.

The park is named after Johann Heinrich Spindelmann. He was born in 1878 and died in 1927. Spindelmann had a humble start. He lost his parents early and grew up in an Altenessen orphanage. He became a successful import merchant. Spindelmann never forgot his roots.

In 1922, while on a business trip, Spindelmann wrote his will. He was aboard the Dutch passenger steamship Jan Pieterszoon Coen. He bequeathed his entire fortune to the city of Essen. His wish was to create a foundation for supporting orphans. In return, the city was obligated to maintain his gravesite.

The Spindelmannpark is not just a green space. It is a place of remembrance. It honors a man who gave back to his community.

In recent years, Spindelmannpark has seen significant upgrades. In 2021, the park was redesigned with community input. The goal was to balance recreation with quiet reflection.

The western and southern areas retain their peaceful character. Here, flower meadows surround the historic gravestones. In the eastern part of Spindelmannpark, you will now find activity zones. These include a beach volleyball court, a playground, and even outdoor fitness equipment. These additions make the park more appealing to families and sports enthusiasts.

The transformation cost around 470.000 Euro. Funding came from various sources. These included the European Regional Development Fund.

The park’s location is also noteworthy. It sits north of the intersection of Berthold-Beitz-Boulevard and Gladbecker Straße. This makes it an accessible green space for residents.

Take a moment to appreciate how Spindelmannpark has evolved. It has transformed from a cemetery into a vibrant community space. It blends history, nature, and recreation. As you explore, remember Johann Heinrich Spindelmann. He was a man who left a lasting legacy. His generosity continues to benefit the children of Essen.
