Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church

Why did folks gather under the oaks, braving high waters and bumpy roads to worship? It’s a question that echoes through the history of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church here in Denver. This church, nestled in the heart of the city, has a story that stretches back to 1911. It’s a story of resilience, faith, and the unwavering desire for a place to worship. Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church wasn’t always the building you see before you. Its earliest members, like Sister Pearl Lofton Williams, worshipped under the shade of oak trees. Imagine the scene: the rustle of leaves overhead, the murmur of prayers, the shared hymns rising in the air. They faced hardships, sometimes wading through high water after a rain to reach their sacred space. But their faith remained unshaken. Eventually, a simple wooden structure replaced the oak canopy. This sanctuary, though modest, symbolized the growing congregation. Years later, in 1951, a cinder block building took its place, a testament to their perseverance. The challenging roads remained a constant, a bumpy reminder of the journey they undertook for their faith. The church thrived under a succession of devoted ministers. Reverends Willie Johnson, Sheppard Newkirk, and Joseph Williams, all of Wilmington, NC, guided the congregation. Then came Reverend Castela Goodman from Southport, NC and Reverend Willie Yeoman of Winnabow, NC. Rev. Yeoman, taking the helm after Rev. Goodman’s passing in 1946, ushered in an era of remarkable growth. He inspired the congregation to envision a future beyond their current circumstances. He led them towards a new location, a higher ground both literally and figuratively. This vision took shape in 1970, when Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church found its home at its current location. It was a march of faith, led by Rev. Yeoman himself. The new building, a beacon of hope and progress, symbolized a new chapter in the church’s rich history.
