Tucked away in the tea-growing hills of Ujitawara, Kyoto, lies the serene Shojuin Temple. A world away from the bustling city, Shojuin offers a tranquil escape. It beckons you to explore its hidden treasures. Shojuin Temple may appear humble from the outside, resembling a traditional farmhouse. But don’t let that fool you. Within its walls lies a rich history and captivating beauty. Shojuin was founded approximately 800 years ago. It serves as a testament to the enduring power of the Koyasan Shingon sect of Buddhism.

Shojuin Temple houses a remarkable treasure, an eleven-faced Kannon statue. This sacred image is unveiled to the public only once every 50 years. Even when hidden, the statue’s presence can be felt. A string tied to its finger allows visitors to connect with Kannon’s compassionate energy. They can offer prayers and seek solace. Another significant artifact within Shojuin Temple is the statue of Fudo-myo. Carved by the renowned priest Kaikei in the early 1200s, this statue exudes a powerful aura. A large photograph of Fudo-myo’s head is displayed in the main hall. It offers a glimpse into the statue’s intricate details.

The main hall of Shojuin Temple is adorned with exquisite artwork. Four fusuma panels depict a tiger gracefully roaming through a bamboo forest. Four other panels showcase striking calligraphy, adding an air of elegance. Hand-painted hanging scrolls depicting birds and animals further enhance the temple’s artistic charm. Shojuin Temple invites you to wander through its peaceful grounds. A stone path leads from the main hall to a serene rock garden. A solitary tree stands at its center. The surrounding mountainside is draped in lush greenery. A covered walkway with hand-painted panels depicting grapes and playful squirrels adds a touch of whimsy.

Interestingly, Shojuin Temple is divided by a narrow road. A new hall stands on the opposite side. It features a unique “inome mado,” or boar-eye window. Shaped like a heart, this traditional motif is believed to ward off evil and attract good fortune. The window frames the surrounding scenery. It transforms with the seasons, showcasing pink in spring, green in summer, orange in autumn, and white in winter. The new hall’s ceiling boasts 160 stunning panels adorned with flowers and Japanese landscapes. Painted by 90 different artists, these panels feature hidden gems. Look closely for the enchanting Kyoto maiko and the four mythical beasts guarding Japan’s cardinal directions.

Shojuin Temple hosts an enchanting “Furin Matsuri,” or wind chime festival, every summer. Thousands of colorful wind chimes create a symphony of gentle sounds. Visitors can stroll beneath the chimes. They can experience a sense of tranquility and coolness that is deeply cherished in Japanese culture. Shojuin, though small, is a hidden gem in Kyoto. It offers a unique blend of history, art, and natural beauty. It awaits your discovery.
