Let’s journey to Argüello in Córdoba Argentina a place with a name that echoes through history. Argüello’s story is intertwined with the early settlers of Córdoba. It is also linked to places as far away as Granada and Nicaragua. The name Argüello carries weight.

Imagine stepping back to the late 16th century. Córdoba de la Nueva Andalucía is a growing city. It sits between the coast and the interior settlements. Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera founded it in 1573. He named it after his home in Spain. The Argüello family name appears on the scene. They became part of the city’s fabric.

By the end of the 17th century Córdoba became the wealthiest city in Tucumán. The Jesuits arrived in 1599. They established the University of Córdoba in 1613. It was the first university in the country. Argüello may have been among the students there. Maybe the family contributed to the city’s growth.

The creation of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata in 1776 shifted power. Buenos Aires became the capital. Córdoba resisted the central government. This resistance lasted until the 1860s. Did the Argüello family play a role in this opposition? It is a question for the historians.

The late 19th century brought railroads and the San Roque Dam. Córdoba’s commerce and industry grew. The dam provided water and power. Factories sprang up. Córdoba became a hub for leather textiles and food processing. It is not known if the Arguello family profited from this.

Córdoba remained religiously conservative. It opposed secular education in the 1880s. The 20th century saw labor activism and Radical influence. In 1955 a general’s capture of Córdoba led to the downfall of President Juan Perón. Student and labor conflicts in 1969 became known as the Cordobazo. Argüello’s role during these times is not documented.

Today Argüello is part of the vibrant city of Córdoba. It lies at 31° 21′ 0″ South and 64° 15′ 0″ West. Argüello offers hotels and convenient car rentals.

The name Argüello extends beyond Argentina. The Argüello name is found in Mexico Nicaragua and the United States. The name appears in politics sports and the arts. The Arguello family’s influence extends far and wide.
