Slipping beneath the bustling streets of Delhi, the Grey Line whispers tales of swift connections and unexpected discoveries. The Grey Line, or Line 9 as it’s officially known, is a concise yet crucial part of the Delhi Metro network. This 5.19-kilometer line offers a unique journey between Dwarka and the Dhansa Bus Stand in Najafgarh. The Grey Line boasts a distinction: it’s the shortest line in the entire Delhi Metro system. Opening in stages, the Dwarka-Najafgarh section welcomed its first passengers in October 2019. Later, in September 2021, the extension to Dhansa Bus Stand was inaugurated, completing the line. At Dwarka station, the Grey Line intersects with the Blue Line. This offers a crucial link to the wider metro network, but also a fascinating engineering quirk. The Grey Line uses standard gauge tracks, while the Blue Line employs broader gauge tracks. Dwarka station stands out for another reason. It’s unique in the network with five platforms on a single level. Two cater to the Blue Line, two to the Grey Line, and the fifth connects the Blue Line with the Najafgarh Depot. The Grey Line shares its rolling stock with the Pink and Magenta lines. However, you won’t find platform screen doors here. Projected ridership numbers didn’t justify their installation. A hidden gem along the Grey Line is Najafgarh station. Initially designed as a standard rectangle, land acquisition challenges forced a redesign. The result? A unique dumbbell-shaped station, slightly smaller in the middle due to the land constraints. The Grey Line may be short, but it embodies the ingenuity and adaptability of the Delhi Metro. It demonstrates the metro’s commitment to connecting even the furthest reaches of the city.
