Can you envision a star, a million times larger than our Earth, shrunk down to the size of a beach ball? Here at the foot of the Ebneter Nepomuk-brücke, the Planetenweg, Sonne Sculpture represents just that. This unassuming steel sphere, once part of a grander design, is a testament to a cosmic dream. The Planetenweg, or “Planet Path,” was conceived in 2005 by Armin Keller. It was brought to life by 100 apprentices from Freiburg’s International Bund (IB) training center in 2008. They meticulously crafted models of our solar system, scaling down billions of kilometers to a manageable 2.8 km walk along the Dreisam River. Imagine walking from this one-meter-wide sun, all the way to Neptune, the last planet on the path, 2.8 kilometers away. This Planetenweg, Sonne Sculpture, and a now-lonely Neptune model are the sole survivors. Sadly, vandalism and theft led to the dismantling of the other planetary installations in 2016. The remaining pieces now reside at the IB training center, silent witnesses to a cosmic journey interrupted. The Planetenweg was designed with a scale of 1:1.6 billion for distances and 1:1.4 billion for planet sizes. Each model was perched on a 1.5-meter-high stainless steel column. Earth, for instance, would be a tiny blue marble, only 9.1 mm across. Jupiter, a giant even in miniature form, would span 10.2 cm. Though most of the Planetenweg is gone, this Sonne Sculpture remains. It serves as a reminder of the vastness of space and the fragility of human endeavors, even those inspired by the cosmos.
