Gazing upon this tranquil oasis, can you envision the bustling graveyard that once surrounded Peterskirchlein? Peterskirchlein stands before you, a seemingly simple chapel. Yet its story is intertwined with the history of Regensburg, whispers of famous names, and a touch of the divine. This unassuming building began its life in 1806. It served as St. Peter’s Church, the chapel for Regensburg’s first Catholic cemetery outside the city walls. Commissioned by Bishop Georg Michael Wittmann, whose heart rests within these very walls, Peterskirchlein has witnessed centuries of change. The original plans by Emanuel Herigoyen only account for the present choir. The full vision, complete with the nave and western tower, wasn’t realized until 1821. Funding for this expansion came largely from a remarkable woman, Felicitas von Neuenstein, the last abbess of Obermünster Abbey. A plaque on the west facade commemorates Wittmann. Another honors Johannes Kepler, the famed astronomer. Kepler, though not buried here at Peterskirchlein, rests in the former Protestant Petersfriedhof. This older cemetery, located south of Peterskirchlein, was sadly destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. Kepler’s exact burial site was lost in the chaos, a poignant reminder of time’s relentless march. The Catholic cemetery, once a final resting place for the poor, soldiers, and hospital patients, eventually became the burial ground of prominent citizens. Composers, musicians, and scholars found their eternal rest here. However, with the construction of Regensburg’s main train station in the late 19th century, the Catholic cemetery had to make way for progress. It officially closed in 1873. The Peterskirchlein, however, remained. Throughout the 20th century, the chapel faced threats of demolition, but the city rallied to save this historical gem. It has served various communities. The American military held services here after World War II. Later, the Hungarian community found solace within its walls. Today, Peterskirchlein serves the Bulgarian Orthodox community. Its simple elegance and peaceful setting offer a respite from the bustling city just beyond its doors. As you admire Peterskirchlein, remember its journey. It is a testament to resilience, a silent witness to the ebb and flow of life and death, and a beautiful thread in the rich tapestry of Regensburg’s history.
