Envision a park born from generosity. Isham Park in Inwood is such a place. It is a reminder of a family’s love for their city. Today we will explore this 20-acre historic park.

Isham Park began as part of William Bradley Isham’s estate. He was a successful leather merchant. Isham later became involved in banking. In 1864, he bought land in Inwood for a summer home. The property featured a two-story house. It also had a greenhouse, gardens, and a cold spring.

After William Isham died in 1909, his daughter Julia Isham Taylor wanted to honor him. In 1911, she gifted almost six acres to New York City. This gift was on the condition that it become a park named after her father. Her aunt Flora E. Isham also donated land in 1912.

The community celebrated the new Isham Park in September 1912. More land was added over the years. Samuel Isham, William’s son, bequeathed more land in 1915. Julia Isham Taylor purchased additional land in 1917. By 1927, the city had acquired 20 acres. These acres once belonged to the Isham estate.

Isham Park’s original design included the Isham mansion. There were also stables and a greenhouse. Sadly, these were demolished in the 1940s due to upkeep costs. Robert Moses, the Parks Commissioner, made this decision.

Look around and you’ll notice the park’s varied landscape. You will see marble outcroppings dating back to the Cambrian period. These outcroppings are popular with geology students. The park also features a public garden and a grass lawn. Many trees and shrubs grow here too. One notable tree is a large gingko. It dates back to the 1860s.

At the park’s Broadway entrance, you can spot an old milestone. It reads “12 Miles from New York”. This marker once stood on Kingsbridge Road. William Isham had it built into the wall. The milestone marked the carriageway to his estate.

Take a moment to appreciate the views. Although partially obstructed by buildings now, the Isham family wanted to preserve the views of the Hudson and Harlem Rivers. They also wanted to preserve the Spuyten Duyvil.

Isham Park is more than just a green space. It is a testament to a family’s generosity. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving open spaces in our city. As George McAneny said in 1912, Isham Park is a noble gift for the people of New York City. It offers beauty and views for all to enjoy.
