Macomb’s Bridge Branch has a rich history. It first opened its doors in 1955. The library was named after the nearby Macomb’s Dam Bridge. This swing bridge has been operating since 1895. It is the fifth oldest in New York City.

For many years, Macomb’s Bridge Branch was one of the smallest libraries in the NYPL system. It only had 685 square feet. But in 2020, everything changed. A $4.8 million project transformed the library. The new Macomb’s Bridge Branch is five times larger than the original. It now boasts 3,375 square feet.

The new space offers many amenities. There is an adult reading room. There is an expanded computer facility. There is space for classes and children’s programs. You can also find more charging stations and a public restroom. The new Macomb’s Bridge Branch is located across the street from its original location. It is on Adam Clayton Powell Junior Boulevard near West 151st Street.

The Macomb’s Bridge Library is in a building owned by the New York City Housing Authority. It is the first New York Public Library capital project completed in 2020.

Tony Marx is the President of The New York Public Library. He said that the Macomb’s Bridge Library offered exceptional service for 65 years despite its small size. He added that it is an honor to introduce the community to the new and much larger home.

The expansion of Macomb’s Bridge Branch means greater possibilities. There are more opportunities for educational programming, workshops, and classes. Library officials held community planning sessions. They wanted feedback from area residents. This feedback was incorporated into the plans for the new facility.
