Vahrenheide stands as the westernmost and greenest part of its district. Once, it was a vast military area. The old airport was also located here. Karl Jatho even made his first flight attempts from here.
Back in the 1950s, the area started to transform. Modern living spaces began to appear on the once barren Vahrenwalder Heide. Planners made sure to include plenty of open spaces. Green areas were deliberately created between the residential blocks.
The central green space in Vahrenheide covers about a tenth of the district. There are many playgrounds. These are not just for children. You can even find a Boule court here.
Even the Reiterstadion and the Lister Bad are part of Vahrenheide. Despite their names, they do not belong to List. Vahrenheide is relatively young. It has only existed for a little over 60 years.
Still, Vahrenheide’s residents have seen major changes. A large part of Vahrenheide became a redevelopment area in 1998. It was a pioneer in the “Social City” program. Vahrenwald, where Vahrenheide is located, dates back to the 12th century. The suburb has moved with the times. Now, it is a trendy inner-city addition to Hanover.
Start your visit to Vahrenwald at Vahrenwalder Platz. This modern hub offers shopping opportunities. Enjoy a meal or a drink in a café. From there, take a short walk north to Vahrenwalder Park.
The park features a pleasant lawn surrounded by trees. It is a great spot for picnics. Kids can play in the playground. There is also an indoor pool and a library next to the park.
Visit the Royal Riding Hall near the park. This large brick building dates back to 1876. It once trained Prussian Military Riding School men and horses. Today, it houses businesses and an events center. Check its website for events during your visit.
East of the park, you will find Sankt Joseph Kirche. This ornate Catholic church dates back to 1912. It needed restoration after World War II damage. The church’s exterior contrasts with its simple interior.

Walk along the Mittelland Canal. Pleasant paths run beside the tree-lined canal.
Near the Royal Riding School, discover converted stables housing modern businesses. Dine at a restaurant in one of these buildings. It is a great way to end your afternoon in Vahrenwald.
But wait. There is one more interesting tidbit. In the night of February 20, 2025, an unknown person set fire to a restaurant at Vahrenheider Markt. A 40-year-old employee escaped unharmed.
