The imposing dome gleams. It dominates the Essen skyline. This is the Ditib-Bin Merkez Camii a mosque unlike any other.
It stands proudly in the Altendorf district a testament to faith and community. This isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub. It’s a community center.
The Ditib-Bin Merkez Camii wasn’t always so grand. Its story began humbly. It started as a small building. Then it was a too-small space in a backyard. This building was eventually sold. The community needed more room. They needed a larger space for worship. They needed a place to gather.
Enter architect Oylar Saguner. He was a member of the local DITIB board. He had even worked on the Oberhausen CentrO. Saguner transformed a former warehouse. This warehouse was once part of the Bohmer shoe store. He turned this ordinary building into something extraordinary.
The transformation cost around 4 million Euros. This money came from the community’s hard work and savings. Donations also helped. The old building on Helenenstrasse was sold. That money helped fund this new building. The result is stunning.
The mosque boasts a remarkable feature. It has a seven-meter-high dome. This dome’s diameter is 31.44 meters. It is larger than the dome of the Cologne Mosque. The architect claims this is the largest dome of a mosque in Europe. Under this impressive dome sits an 800-square-meter prayer hall. This prayer hall can comfortably accommodate 360 worshippers. The supporting pillars of the old warehouse roof were removed. The supporting pillars were no longer needed.
The Ditib-Bin Merkez Camii is more than just a prayer hall. It offers much more. It has social rooms. There is a lecture hall seating 180 people. A 600-square-meter sports hall is available for community use. A language institute supports learning. There are cafes for youth seniors and women. Administrative offices and living quarters are also within the building. They are for the Imam the caretaker and possibly visiting members of the community.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on November 9 2012. Originally a minaret was planned. This minaret was to be 23.15 meters tall. The design included a spiral staircase clad in stainless steel. Letters from various world languages would have been added. This was a proposed symbol of understanding and the Tower of Babel. This minaret was not ultimately built. A five-meter-high sound barrier was instead erected at the western end of the property. This was to help keep the noise down for the nearby residential buildings.
The Ditib-Bin Merkez Camii is more than a building. It’s a symbol of community resilience and faith. It stands as a beacon of hope and understanding in Essen.
